Canon Opens RF Mount To Sigma And Tamron

Canon Opens RF Mount to Sigma and Tamron: After years of exclusivity, Canon has announced a breakthrough: Sigma and Tamron are stepping into the world of Canon RF mount lenses. This move follows Canon’s earlier commitment to expanding third-party lens options for RF mount users.

Sigma is introducing six of its “Contemporary” lenses to the RF mount lineup. These lenses, already popular for other mirrorless mounts, include the 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN, 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN, 16mm f/1.4 DC DN, 23mm f/1.4 DC DN, 30mm f/1.4 DC DN, and 56mm f/1.4 DC DN. Meanwhile, Tamron is kicking off with the 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A RXD (Model B060).

Sigma promises full compatibility and performance optimization for Canon RF. They’ve developed autofocus algorithms and communication enhancements tailored for Canon RF Mount lenses. Sigma’s lenses will support high-speed autofocus, AF-C (Continuous AF), in-camera aberration correction, and image stabilization. The mount itself is rubber-sealed for durability in various conditions. However, Sigma hasn’t specified a release timeline.

Tamron’s 11-20mm f/2.8 lens is described as a compact, lightweight option ideal for APS-C cameras (already available for Sony E and Fujifilm X mounts). Tamron emphasizes its strong optical performance despite its small form factor. The lens is expected to launch in 2024.

Canon’s decision to license RF mount access primarily for APS-C cameras is a notable step, although it remains focused on its full-frame offerings. The company has defended its closed-mount strategy as a business decision. However, the move to collaborate with Sigma and Tamron reflects a response to user demand for more lens options, especially for crop-sensor bodies.

With the addition of Sigma’s six lenses and Tamron’s offering, Canon RF users will soon have a broader range of optics to choose from. This development marks a significant shift in the RF ecosystem, promising more versatility and choice for photographers invested in Canon’s mirrorless system.
